Just like she said, Chandra Krout will waste no time spending the $2.28 million dollars the City of Irvine was recently awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy to improve the energy efficiency of the City’s buildings and municipal infrastructure. Currently, Irvine has four RFP’s available to download on the City’s web-site here after registering your firm.

Due January 4th, 2010
- Training Services for the EPA’s Portfolio Manager System
Due January 11th, 2010
- Residential Retrofit Program
- Web-Based Tracking and Reporting System
- Sustainable Facilities Program
To the Libertarians who won’t take much comfort in seeing their tax money being spent by the government, you can take some comfort in knowing that each investment made with this money by the City of Irvine will need to continuously fund itself. An example used by Chandra during a local USGBC-OC presentation had to due with new, highly efficient street lighting and how the money saved by using less electricity and having to change out the bulbs less must be enough to cover the life-cycle costs of the improvement itself. This money will not just be thrown up into the air and hopefully make a positive impact in our community.
Irvine is one of the few Orange County Cities to have the foresight or budget to staff someone like Chandra to help improve their energy efficiency and reduce harmful greenhouses gases in order to meet the needs of progressive state initiatives like AB32 and take advantage of financing tools like the well recognized Berkley model commonly known as AB811. It’s safe to say that Irvine’s investment in this type of staff is going to pay BIG dividends.

Wish some one would really stand up and question the safety of the CFL’s. Mercury filling the air in a community is scary to me and I live on the borders of Irvine. Let’s hope they use LEDs in their lighting.
