Rainwater Harvesting is for real!

It’s not all that well respected, even among the converted greenies, but why? In my opinion it’s because not everyone has had a chance to sit in front of Brad Lancaster for an hour and been brain washed with real rainwater religion. What I took away from Brad’s presentation in 2008 at one of the Center for Spiritual Living’s wonderful sustainable dinner and presentations was passive rainwater collection.

Instead of trying to hold up fresh rainwater in your little barrel and make it late for wherever it’s next appointment is, let it run back down into the Earth. Let rainwater do what it’s been doing before Orange County was Orange County or… the dreaded “OC”. By letting rainwater permeate back into our natural aquifer with thoughtful landscaping, we’d reduce energy usage at our incredibly expensive water treatment facilities and keep our ocean friends much happier. When the rain comes these days, it’s flushed through our storm water system and out into the ocean which drags harmful pollutants into the Pacific Ocean… where wild shamus and flippers live.

Approx. 40% of Northern OC’s water comes from our aquifer
Approx. 70% of OC’s water is used to water landscaping (grass)
Approx. 30% of our electricity is used to move water to OC
Does this make sense to anyone…?

Right now we’re destroying what’s left of our top soil and our valuable fresh water source and natural storage system under our feet. We’ve done such a poor job of managing our rainwater that we’ve had to build an internationally recognized Ground Water Replenishment plant in Fountain Valley. Approximately $350 million to build and I don’t even want to know the annual operating costs or energy consumption of the facility. But aren’t we proud we’ve once again conquered nature with expense, energy draining technology instead of following nature’s path to abundance, right!!?
